Pantone first announced "the Color of the Year" in 1999: Cerulean. The concept made international press, and the color made an impact: Fans of The Devil Wears Prada might recall the iconic moment when Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly delivers a speech about the significance of the Cerulean sweater worn by Anne Hathaway's character—a nod to the color trend (even though the movie came out in 2006). Relive it here.
As the movie script explains, you may not take these color choices seriously, but they will impact color trends – and maybe your preferences – for years to come.
Paint brands now unveil their own Color of the Year, with announcements coming earlier each season. For 2025, we're seeing a shift towards darker, moodier, and more reflective hues for interior colors. For example, Benjamin Moore introduced Cinnamon Slate, Glidden chose Purple Basil, and C2 picked Raku. (add links to all colors and maybe add them to the post so they don't have to click)
Sherwin-Williams isn't taking sides and introduced an entire "2025 Color Capsule" (link) collection, which features nine shades, some of which join the darker cocooning trend. Other colors in its Capsule evoke hope and rejuvenation, including a bright Convivial Yellow and a serene green called Quietude.
Which will you choose?
